Summary
Overview
Vim What? ("the Extension") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains exactly what the Extension does with your data — which is almost nothing.
What we collect
We collect nothing. The Extension stores a small set of preferences locally on your device using your browser's localStorage API:
- Your selected keyboard layout (e.g. QWERTY, Colemak, Dvorak)
- Your current lesson level
- Which keys you have marked as "learned"
- Any custom key mappings you have added
These values never leave your device and are never transmitted to any server.
What we do not collect
- Personal information (name, email, address)
- Browsing history or activity
- IP addresses or device information
- Analytics or usage statistics
- Cookies or tracking data
Permissions explained
Vim What? requests a single permission: storage. It is used to record the date you installed the extension, so that if you later remove it we can tell roughly how long it was installed. Nothing else is stored through it.
The extension requests no host permissions at all. It runs entirely within its popup window and cannot access any web page content, tabs, or browsing data.
Third-party services
The Extension uses no third-party services, analytics, advertising networks, crash reporters, or external APIs of any kind.
Website analytics disclosure
The Vim What? product website (vimwhat.com) uses Google Analytics and PostHog to understand visitor traffic and improve the site experience. Between them they record pages visited, referral source, and browser and device type.
PostHog also records a session replay, but only on the landing, welcome, and farewell pages and only if you click OK on the recording prompt — the command reference pages are never recorded. If you click No thanks, or ignore the prompt, no session replay is recorded (the page analytics described above still run). Everything typed is masked in those replays, so anything you type is not captured. If you arrive on the welcome or farewell page after installing or removing the extension, we also record which version you had and roughly how many days you used it.
If you clicked OK on the recording prompt and want to withdraw, use the button below. It stops session replay from starting on this browser.
These services operate only on the marketing website — they are not present in the browser extension itself, and no extension user data is ever shared with them. They set cookies to recognise a returning visitor, process data in the United States, and can all be blocked with your browser's tracking protection or an ad blocker. Email updates
If you enter your email address in the "Know when something new ships" form on this site, it is sent to a signup endpoint we operate ourselves (hosted on Cloudflare) and stored in our mailing list at Resend. We use it only to send occasional Whiteboard Works product updates. It is not linked to the Extension, which never sees it. Every message has an unsubscribe link, and you can also email us to be removed.
Feedback forms
If you submit the optional feedback form shown after uninstalling, what you enter — your reason, any comments, and the Extension version, browser and how long you used it — is sent to a form endpoint we operate ourselves (hosted on Cloudflare) and emailed to our support inbox through Resend. We use it only to improve the product. The form asks for no contact details. The forms are optional; you can close the page without sending anything.
Children's privacy
The Extension collects no data from anyone, including children under 13. It is safe for users of all ages.
Changes to this policy
If this policy ever changes, the Extension's version number will be updated and the change will be noted in the Chrome Web Store release notes.
